DOD Funding for Prostate Cancer Research Flat Again for FY2010

By Joel

The US House of Representatives approved the Department of Defense (DoD) appropriations bill a few days ago. The bill included $80 million for the DoD Congressionally Directed Prostate Cancer Research Program for FY2010, the seventh year of flat funding.

The DoD initiative is the most important research funding mechanism for prostate cancer, as it remains the largest single dedicated prostate cancer research initiative funded by the United States government.

America’s Prostate Cancer Organizations had been asking for $120 million to support this program for FY2010, but because men refuse to take a serious interest in advocating for prostate cancer research we have been unable to increase this number. Actually, given the bad shape of the economy and our complacency we probably should be glad that we have not seen cuts in the funding levels.
