Ask For a Blood test to identify AR-V7 in Circulating Tumor Cells if you are starting Xtandi or Zytiga

One of the hot topics in the prostate cancer community is the value of detecting AR-V7 tumor cells circulating in the blood. AR-V7 tumor cells in the blood predicts response or failure of treatment with enzalutamide (Xtandi) or abiraterone (Zytiga). A recent study found that men who have AR-V7 circulating tumor cells in their blood will not respond to Xtandi or Zytiga and will live longer if treated with a taxane based chemotherapy (docetaxel) regimen. A study in JAMA Oncology, showed that evaluating for the presence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) with AR-V7 could optimize treatment protocols. The study looked at 161 men with progressing metastatic castration-resistant [...]

Prostate Cancer Chemotherapy Is not so bad

Chemotherapy with Taxotere (docetaxel) might not be considered because the side effects are misunderstood. Individual experiences and side effects differ widely from one man to another. n Generally, chemotherapy is not as toxic as we think. Even if a patient feels that his chemotherapy is causing more grief than relief, it can be discontinued; there is no contract that will require anyone to continue any treatment that either is not working or makes their quality of life intolerable. On the Malecare Health Unlocked on line Advanced Prostate Cancer support group the following question and responses just appeared (names removed): Question: [...]

Possible Protocols To Treat Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy caused by chemotherapy is a very common problem for many of us as we go through a chemotherapy regime. Despite the large numbers of us who do suffer from this side effect there has been limited numbers of doctor suggested remedies. On the Malecare/ HealthUnlocked Advanced Prostate Cancer online support group there was a recent post from one of the members about a suggestion he has received from his doctor to combat this problematic side effect. The recommendation was to use Pyridoxine 100mg (Vitamin B 6) twice a day and Alpha Lipoic Sustained release 300mg twice a day [...]

Understanding the Reality of the Side Effects from Early Chemotherapy

Ever since the research showing that men who are newly diagnosed with very aggressive prostate cancer have a significant life extension advantage if they move immediately to chemotherapy (with docetaxel) along with hormone therapy (ADT) there has been, what I can only describe as a paradigm shift in the clinical care of men with metastatic hormone-sensitive prostate cancer. However, many men are very afraid to have chemotherapy as there remains concerns about the toxicity (side effects) of the drug. A recent study, however, showed that the adverse events experienced by men who have early chemotherapy tends to be short-lived and [...]
