Comparing the Morbidity of HIFU to CYRO After Failed Radiation Therapy

Currently, there are a number of different treatments used to treat recurrent prostate cancer when the primary treatment had radiation has failed. In this situation surgery is considered very difficult and can only be successfully performed by an experienced surgeon, so alternative treatments are often considered. Long-term data about the success of these alternative treatments has not yet matured, however we do have some insight into the immediate morbidities caused by some of them. A group of researchers compared the morbidity of whole gland salvage ablation using cryotherapy (CRYO) as well as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for radio recurrent prostate [...]

The Well Reviewed Guide to Advanced Prostate Cancer (A Survivor Perspective) Has Been Updated and is Now Available for a free Download

Somehow I have been negligent and not let people know that I have written and posted a major update of my “Guide to Advanced Prostate Cancer.” As in the past, it is available as a free download from the Malecare web site. Helping me to update the book was prostate cancer survivor Craig Pynn and my own caretaker, Wendy Lebowitz. Anyone reading the first edition will be surprised when you see how many changes and updates this edition has included. It now has a very extensive conversation about living in the world as a cancer survivor as well as more [...]

HIFU Treatment a Possible Salvage Therapy After Failed EBRT

A recently published article in Urology Times claims that salvage high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) appears to be an effective treatment option for locally recurrent prostate cancer after primary external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) failure. The study, which this article reported on, used data from analyses of 6-year oncologic outcomes show. When the researchers did a subgroup analysis of the data they concluded that the HIFU must be performed quickly after the radiation failure. This need for quick action was more pronounced for men who had been previously treated with hormone deprivation therapy (ADT). The study’s first author Sebastien Crouzet, MD, [...]

On the Horizon – HIFU for the Treatment of Recurrent Prostate Cancer – A Video and Current Trials

On June 22, 2010 I wrote about the clinical trials currently being run in the United States using High Intensity Focus Ultrasound (HIFU) for the adjuvant treatment for recurrent prostate cancer after the failure of primary radiation therapy. Since approximately 1/3 o all primary radiation therapy will ultimately fail, there is a great need to develop good follow-up therapies that are effective as well as being minimally invasive. Many people believe that HIFU can meet this need. HIFU is currently a very common primary treatment outside of the United States. (See my June 22 post) […]
